Why Cansat?
We chose Cansat because it offered us a serious challenge and a unique opportunity to learn about the process behind space science and develop our interest and curiosity. Cansat will give us the opportunity to develop and build teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills. It will be our project and our responsibility (with the help of our teacher and DIT mentors, of course!!). This project will test our design thinking but most of all how to work as a team effectively and efficiently. We have some team members really interested in programming, other love the hands on practical stuff and other who enjoy talking !! We have a good blend but it will be difficult to select the final 6 in March for the competition. We also chose this project because being able to participate in real life science projects and not just sitting in a lab is an opportunity that should be seized and in St. Columba’s College we take this concept very seriously. Exposing young people to real life science is almost like work experience. Alex Sigurvisson

Cansat is run across schools in Ireland and is aimed at young people interested in space technology. Cansat is a simulation of a satellite recording information integrated into a drink can. The main challenge is to manage to fit all the necessary components needed in the can to record information and survive the conditions of a launch. Cansat in Europe is an initiative of the European Space Agency (ESA), which also supports national Cansat events with the help of local organisations. In our case DIT and SFI have helped us with cansat in Ireland. |
